The Role of RCCBs in Preventing Electric Shocks

In an era where electrical appliances and devices are central to our daily lives, electrical safety must be a top priority. While electricity is indispensable, it can also be dangerous—especially when current leakage goes undetected. Faulty wiring, insulation failure or accidental contact can lead to electric shocks and even electrical fires.

Function of RCCB

  • An RCCB continuously monitors the flow of current in the live (phase) and neutral wires.
  • In a healthy circuit, the current flowing into the phase = the current returning through the neutral.
  • If there is any leakage current (for example, when electricity flows through a person to the ground during a shock, or due to insulation failure), the RCCB quickly detects the imbalance.

Protection Mechanism

  • The moment the difference (called residual current) exceeds a safe limit (usually 30 mA for human protection), the RCCB trips instantly (within milliseconds).
  • This disconnects power supply, preventing serious injury or fatal electrocution.

In short

  • Prevents electric shocks by cutting power when leakage occurs.
  • Protects life (safety device, not just equipment protection like MCB).
  • Provides extra safety in homes, offices, and industries where direct contact or leakage currents may occur.

To protect both lives and property, RCCBs (Residual Current Circuit Breakers) play a critical role. At Greatwhite, our RCCB breakers, part of our advanced switchgears portfolio, are designed to detect and eliminate these hidden hazards instantly.

What Is an RCCB and Why Is It Important?

  • An RCCB constantly monitors the current flowing through the live (phase) and neutral wires of a circuit.
  • Under normal conditions:
Current in phase = current in neutral.
  • If there’s a leakage of current (e.g., due to faulty insulation, damaged wires, or a person accidentally touching a live part), there will be a difference between the two.
  • The RCCB detects this imbalance and immediately trips (disconnects the supply).

Why it matters:

Even small leakage currents can have serious consequences. Here’s how current levels impact the human body:

Leakage Current(mA)

Physiological Effect

1–10 mA Tingling or pricking sensations
10 mA Muscle contraction; unable to let go
20–30 mA Respiratory paralysis
70–100 mA Cardiac fibrillation
500 mA Immediate cardiac arrest

An RCCB can detect and interrupt the flow before it reaches these dangerous levels, acting as a life-saving barrier.

How RCCBs Work

An RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) works on the principle of current balance using a differential transformer inside it.

1. Normal Condition (Safe)

  • Current flowing into the circuit via the live (phase) wire = Current flowing back via the neutral wire.
  • These two currents pass through a sensing coil inside the RCCB.
  • Their magnetic fields cancel each other, so no action is taken → supply continues.

2. Fault Condition (Leakage / Shock)

  • If some current leaks (for example, through a person to the ground or due to faulty insulation), Phase current ≠ Neutral current.
  • This imbalance creates a net magnetic field in the sensing coil.
  • The coil induces a signal that activates a tripping mechanism.
  • The RCCB disconnects the power supply instantly (within 30–300 milliseconds depending on rating).

3. Sensitivity
RCCBs are very sensitive and can detect leakage currents as low as:

  • 30 mA → protection for people (against shocks).
  • 100 mA / 300 mA → protection for equipment & fire hazards.

Simple Example

  • Suppose a person accidentally touches a live wire.
  • Part of the current flows through their body to the ground instead of returning via neutral.
  • RCCB detects this imbalance and cuts power immediately, saving the person.

Greatwhite RCCBs detect both scenarios and immediately isolate the circuit, preventing shock or fire. This rapid response is crucial, especially in homes, schools, offices and industrial spaces.

Key Features of Greatwhite RCCBs

Our RCCB breakers are built with intelligent engineering and user-friendly features to ensure reliability, ease of use and top-tier performance:
  • Test Button: Lets you periodically check the health of the device.
  • Real Trip Indicator: Red (Trip), White (ON/OFF) — for instant status visibility.
  • Combi-head Screws: For easy tightening using flat or Philips tools.
  • Large & Dual Terminals: Supports up to 35 sq.mm for copper or aluminium cables.
  • Cooler Operation: Special design allows heat dissipation during side-by-side installation.
  • Advance Neutral: Closes first and opens last, enhancing connection safety.
  • Easy Extraction: Mounting allows removal without disturbing other units.
  • Voltage-Independent Operation: Performs accurately regardless of voltage fluctuations.

RCCB Ratings and Sensitivities

Greatwhite XT10 RCCBs are available in multiple current ratings (16A to 63A) and three key sensitivity levels:

1. Rated Current (In)

  • The maximum current the RCCB can carry continuously without tripping (it only trips for leakage, not overloads).
  • Common ratings: o 16 A, 25 A, 32 A, 40 A, 63 A
  • Example: A 40 A RCCB can safely handle loads up to 40 amps, but it will trip if leakage exceeds its sensitivity limit.

2. Rated Residual Operating Current (IΔn) – Sensitivity
This defines how much leakage current will cause the RCCB to trip.

  • 30 mA → Protection against direct contact shocks (for homes, offices, personal safety).
  • 100 mA → Protection against leakage + some fire protection (used where equipment safety is also important).
  • 300 mA → Protection mainly against fire hazards due to high leakage (industrial setups, large installations).

3. Pole Configuration

  • Double Pole (DP): For single-phase supply (Live + Neutral).
  • Four Pole (4P): For three-phase supply (3 Lives + Neutral).

4. Tripping Time

  • RCCBs trip very fast, usually within 30 ms to 300 ms depending on sensitivity.
  • This quick action prevents fatal electric shocks.

Example Configurations:

  • 40A / 30mA RCCB – Ideal for household use
  • 63A / 300mA RCCB – Recommended for industrial applications

Available in Double Pole (2P) and Four Pole (4P) configurations, our RCCBs are suitable for all kinds of installations—from simple home circuits to complex commercial setups.

Applications of RCCBs in Real Life

Whether you're an electrician, contractor or homeowner, RCCBs provide essential protection in:
  1. Homes & Residential Buildings
    • Protects family members from electric shocks due to faulty appliances, damaged wires, or accidental contact with live wires.
    • Prevents fire hazards caused by current leakage in old or poor wiring.
    • Commonly used RCCB: 30 mA, 40 A (DP).
  2. Offices & Commercial Spaces
    • Ensures safety of employees using multiple computers, air conditioners, and office equipment.
    • Protects sensitive equipment from leakage current damage.
    • Helps meet electrical safety compliance standards.
  3. Industrial Applications
    • Protects workers in factories from electric shocks.
    • Prevents leakage current fires in heavy machinery and industrial wiring systems.
    • RCCBs with higher ratings (100 mA / 300 mA) are used for equipment + fire protection.
  4. Hospitals & Healthcare Facilities
    • Extremely critical because patients and medical equipment are highly sensitive.
    • RCCBs protect against shocks from life-support machines, diagnostic equipment, or faulty wiring.
    • Mostly 30 mA sensitivity for human safety.
